The drawing depicts a seated female figure wearing a long dress with her right hand behind her head and left hand extended downward to an abstracted, shaggy dog by her side with its head in her lap. She faces the viewer with her head angled downward, her features obscure by the angle. There are only suggestions of a mouth, nose and eyes. Behind her, a large tree trunk and surrounding foliage were suggested by Renoir to indicate a forest. Against a sparsely sketched foreground, her shoes project out from under her dress.
